Can i listen to a Bayaan & the Qur'aan at the same time?

Question

I want to know the rule regarding praying quraan and listening to a bayaan at the same time?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Allah Ta’ala mentions in the Quran:

وَإِذَا قُرِئَ الْقُرْآنُ فَاسْتَمِعُوا لَهُ وَأَنصِتُوا لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ (۷-۲۰٤)

So when the Qur'an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy. (7-204)

The word Istimaa’ in the above verse literally means to listen attentively. When the Quran is recited, it is necessary to listen attentively to the recitation of the Quran. Attentive listening refers to the undivided attention given to the recitation of the Quran.

If the Quran is being recited whilst listening to a Bayaan, then Istimaa’ (listening attentively) will not be fulfilled. One cannot give undivided attention to the recitation of the Quran when listening to a Bayaan. This is due to the fact that listening to a Bayaan requires the mind to be attentive to fully understand what is being said.

Therefore, one should rather take out time to listen to the recitation of the Quran and the Bayaan separately.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
