Fatwa #45463 January 2002United States of America

I am 40 years old married I want to find out if can buy a house on bank financing because the rent is going up day by day and the salary is not increasin by that ratioo what is your opinion.

Answer

When financial circumstances become constraint, we are required to decrease
our spending and live within our means. We are not allowed to get involved
in Haraam merely because the cost of living is rising, and we cannot keep up
with it.

No matter what you are earning, consider that many survive on much less than
that. You too can do so. All it requires to sacrifice the many luxuries we
generally have in our lives. The attitude of a Muslim should be, 'I rather
die than get involved in Haraam.'
