Sun/Moon revolving around the earth
Question
Assalamu Alaikum,
One of my Hindu friend's sent me a video in which a maulana is explaining children that earth is static and sun/moon are revolving around the earth.
My friend is asking explanation on the vearactiy of the statement made by maulana.
Kindly give me an explanation that will satisfy my friends concern and support the Quran.
Jazak Allahu Khairan.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
You refer to the earth, sun and the moon. The Quran refers to the movement of the sun and moon in the following verses: [i]
Translation: And a sign for them is the night. We strip (the cover of) the day from it, and they are suddenly in darkness. And the sun is quickly proceeding towards its destination. That is the designing of the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing. And for the moon We have appointed measured phases, until it turned (pale, curved and fine) like an old branch of date palm. Neither it is for the sun to overtake the moon, nor can the night outpace the day. Each one is floating in an orbit. (Surah Ya Seen: 37-40)
There is no explicit verse about the earth being static or moving. The Quran is silent on that. In such verses, our approach is:
Translation: “Leave those things as unclear that Allah has left as unclear” (Rooh ul Bayaan:352/9)
If any issue is scientifically proven and that is not contrary to the Quran, then it can be accepted. However, if any scientific finding is contrary to the Quran, we will reject it.
And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
