Is this narration authentic?

Question

Is this narration authentic?

لترك ذرة مما نهى الله عنه أفضل من عبادة الثقلين

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The narration you refer to can be traced back to as early as Al-Kafi Sharh Usoolil Bazdawi by Husamuddin As-Sighnaqi (711AH). He states,

Translation: Being afflicted with a prohibition is more challenging than being afflicted with a command. The reward for an action which demands continuity is far beyond the rewards for upholding a command. Continuity is much superior. It is this that has been alluded to in the statement of Nabi (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) “Abstaining from that which Allah prohibits us from, may it be even a seeds worth, is far better than weighty worship.” (Al-Kafi, pg244/1)

Alauddin Al-Bukhari (730AH) in his Kashful Asrar Sharh Usoolil Bazdawi also quotes this narration, most likely taking from his predecessor, Husamuddin As-Sighnaqi (711AH). [ii]

It is from Kashful Asrar that Ibn Nujaym[iii], Allamah Tahtawi[iv] and others quote this narration.

This narration has been cited without any chain of narration therefore, one cannot comment on its authenticity. However, the words of the aforementioned narration should not be quoted as a Hadith until the chain can be located.

Nevertheless, abstinence from sin is established as a common theme throughout many other authentic narrations.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
