Fatwa #44635 January 2002United States of America

How do you explain to a <8 year old, who wants a Barbie, that it?s not allowed in Islam, without letting her feel that her religion is not presenting a hindrance.

Answer

In Islam, Shirk (ascribing partners with Allah) and anything relating to
that is prohibited. That includes pictures and toys of animate objects as
idol worship commenced with pictures of idols.

Such pictures were then made into images and later worshipped. We advise you
explain the above in a very simplified form to your child according to her
level of understanding.
