What is the status of Tahneek in Islam?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Tahneek is Sunnah. Tahneek is chewing a date until it is paste-like and applying that paste to the palate of the child. If a date is not available, honey or anything sweet can be used.^[1] One will not be sinful if the practice of Tahneek is omitted.

It is preferable that an Alim or a pious elder of the family performs the Tahneek. If not, then by any Muslim.

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلى الله عَليه وسَلم كَانَ يُؤْتَى بِالصِّبْيَانِ فَيُبَرِّكُ عَلَيْهِمْ وَيُحَنِّكُهُمْ

Translation: Aisha (Radhiyallahu Anha) narrates that "the people used to bring their newborn children to the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and He would bless them and perform the Tahneek" (Sahih Muslim-514)

بچہ کی تحنیک

مسنون ہے کہ بچہ کی پیدائش کے بعد کسی نیک شخص سے کھجور چبواکر اس کا شیرا یا کوئی میٹھی چیز مثلاً شہد وغیرہ بچہ کے تالو میں چٹادیا جائے، اور نیک لوگوں سے بچہ کے لئے دعا کرائی جائے، دورِ نبوت میں صحابۂ کرام رضی اللہ عنہم اپنے نومولود بچوں کو حضور اقدس صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی خدمت میں لاکر تحنیک کرایا کرتے تھے۔ عن عائشۃ رضی اللّٰہ تعالیٰ عنہا ان رسول اللّٰہ صلی اللّٰہ علیہ وسلم کان یؤتیٰ بالصبیان فیبرک علیہم ویحنکہم۔ (مسلم شریف حدیث: ۲۸۶، ابوداؤد شریف حدیث: ۵۱۰۶، مرقاۃ المفاتیح ۸؍۷۵، مسائل قربانی وعقیقہ ۵۸) قولہ ویحنکہم بتشدید النون أی یمضغ التمر أو شیئاً حلواً ثم یدلک بہ حنکہ۔ (مرقاۃ المفاتیح ۸؍۷۵
