How much sleep did the prophet SAW prescribe?

Question

How much sleep did the prophet SAW prescribe? When did he SAW wake up? When did he sleep?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Generally, Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) would sleep early and wake up often at different times at night to perform Tahajjud.

It is advisable for a person to sleep early at night and avoid unnecessary talk after Esha.

It is Makrooh (disliked) to engage in unnecessary talk after Esha. See the following Hadith:

عَنْ أَبِي بَرْزَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَكْرَهُ النَّوْمَ قَبْلَ الْعِشَاءِ وَالْحَدِيثَ بَعْدَهَا (صحيح البخاري-٥٦٨)

Translation: Abu Barzah (Radhiallahu Anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) disliked sleeping before Esha and talking after it. (Sahih Al-Bukhari-568)[1]

Early sleep enables one to have a fulfilling sleep and wake up for Tahajjud or at least wake up timeously for Fajr.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
