Fatwa #4420317 February 2020United Kingdom

In the case of a life threatening injury, can a woman remove her Hijaab/Niqaab to save someone?

Question

Taking the Hijab off to save someones life.

Assalaam Wa'alaykum.

I have a general question which has been in my mind since past few days and have not been able to find an answer to this. I would like to know if it would be permissble for a woman to remove her hijab or niqab when someone's life is at risk. For example, if someone is heavily bleeding due to a life threatening injury and to apply pressure to the wound in order to stop bleeding, would the use of one's hijab/niqab be allowed? If nothing as such is available.

I'd be grateful if you could answer this question.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In the case of a life threatening injury, as a last resort, if one were to remove her Hijab or Niqab to save someone’s life, she would be excused for doing so.[i]
