Should I marry this person?

Question

Assalamualaikum,

I am a 43 years old widow having two sons 15 and 17 who live with me in US. My daughter is 19 and lives with her grandparents in Pakistan and studying medicine. I am a working woman and not depending on anyone financially. I am looking to marry someone who is pious and fears Allah. A man age 51 proposed me , who I met online on a matrimonial site. He lives 4 hours from me in another state. When I enquired about him, I got to know that he's a pious man and used to involved in mosque activities as well. He's recently divorced and has 5 sons. One is 25 and he's not in contact with him from last 2 years but in contact with his ex wife. Two of his sons are twins and 21 year old. They both living with him in the same house but they are on their own and they have no respect for their father and hardly communicate with him. Two of his younger twins are 14 years of age and live with him as well and he's taking care of them. The reason for divorce and his sons not giving him respect is that his ex was always abusing him and cursing him, there was fighting in house for long time and her ex didn't let him say anything to the kids and stand in front of him whenever he tried to say anything to kids.

I want to marry this guy, he told me clearly that he's not rich, and will not be able to support me financially unless he's done paying his ex the amount court ordered for next two years, and he's paying rent and bills for his house where he's taking care of his kids. He said he will kick out his older 21 years old out of the house as they are working and on his own and I can move in his house with my 2 sons.

I am not willing to move with him until my older son gets in college. After nikah, we can manage to meet each other on weekends and he's agreed on that. Please advise me if this will be good choice for me according to Sharia? My friend says that he was not a good father, so how can he be a good husband and also he's not supporting me financially unlessI move with him, because he can't afford two separate households which I understand.

If I ask anyone around me, people just pointing out negative things. Please advise what's right for me according to Islam and Sharia.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

We make Dua that Allah guides you to whatever is best for you according to his absolute knowledge and wisdom.

Everyone faces challenges in life. Many people comment on others without knowing the reality of the situation. Our advice is you consider the proposal and make Istikarah until you are satisfied with your decision. Do not commit to the marriage if you have genuine doubts. Continue to make Dua to Allah to guide you on whatever is best for you.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
