Keeping the name Muhammed Hadi

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

When choosing a name for the child, it should be done with the intention that the child will be blessed with the barakah of that name. The name of a person has an effect on the individual’s personality and his/her characteristics.

Consider the following ḥādīth:

إِنَّكُمْ تُدْعَوْنَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ بِأَسْمَائِكُمْ وَأَسْمَاءِ آبَائِكُمْ فَأَحْسِنُوا أَسْمَاءَكُمْ

Translation: On the Day of Resurrection, you will be called by your names and by your father's names, so give yourselves good names.

(Sunan-Abu Dawood)^[i]

The names of Allah Ta’ala are divided into two categories:^[ii]

1.      The first category consists of those names that have a meaning exclusive to Allāh Ta’āla such as Rahmān, Khāliq, and Rāziq. It is impermissible to name ones child with any of these names except with the addition of Abd (servant of) as they are sole attributes of Allāh Ta’āla.

2.      The second category consists of such names that are not exclusive to Allāh Ta’āla such as Rahīm, Mālik and Hādī. It is permissible to name ones child with any of these names without prefixing it with the word Abd. As for the name Hādī, it will fall under the second category and therefore it will be permissible for one to name his Muhammed Hādī.
