Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Firstly, it is important to understand that Islam is a complete and perfect way of life. As Muslims, we believe that true respect and honour can only be attained by following the pure teachings of Islam and the Blessed Sunnah of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam. In the Ahadith, we are advised to oppose the disbelievers:
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ " خَالِفُوا الْمُشْرِكِينَ وَفِّرُوا اللِّحَى وَأَحْفُوا الشَّوَارِبَ ".
Translation: Ibn `Umar Radiyallahu Anhu narrates that Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam said, 'Do the opposite of what the mushrikeen do. Lengthen the beards and cut the moustaches short.(Sahih al-Bukhari 5892)
Umar Radiyallahu Anhu has said:
إنا كنا أذل قوم فأعزنا الله بالإسلام فمهما نطلب العز بغير ما أعزنا الله به أذلنا الله
Translation: “We were the most disgraced of people. Allah Ta'ala then gave us honour through Islam. If we ever seek honour in something besides that through which Allah Ta'ala has honoured us (Islam), Allah Ta'ala will disgrace us.”
The American tradition of Thanksgiving is a festival in the month of November to mark the first successful harvest of the early European settlers. Today, Thanksgiving is primarily celebrated as a secular holiday. Every year, Americans gather at the home of a family member to partake in a symbolic feast as a gesture of thanks for the bounties they enjoy as per the holiday’s namesake. As Muslims, every day of ours must be ‘Thanksgiving’ i.e. we should always be grateful to Allah Ta’ala for the innumerable bounties that He continuously showers upon us.
We should bear in mind that we are not only prohibited from emulating the kuffar in their religious celebrations such as Christmas, Easter, Diwali, etc, but we are also prohibited from emulating them in their ways, fashions, events and culture such as birthday parties, wedding anniversaries, new year's day, etc. In essence, all these events belong to the kuffaar culture and have nothing to do with Islam. Therefore one should not be part of Thanksgiving celebrations in any way.
Any other day in the year, for example Eid, could be chosen for families to gather and eat together keeping in mind the laws of Shariah.
And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
