Can one keep the name Muhammad Safwaan?

Question

Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah

Dear Mufti Sahab, can we keep name as Mohammed Safwan? Please advice, jazak Allah khayr.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) mentioned:

Translation: “On the day of judgement you will be called by your names and the names of your fathers, so give yourself good names”

The name ‘Muhammed’ (praised one) was chosen by Allah Ta’alah specifically for Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Hence, it is highly advisable to keep such a name.

‘Safwaan’ was the name of many Sahaba (Radhiyallahu Anhum). The meaning of Safwaan is a pure/clean rock.

The name ‘Muhammad Safwaan’ is a suitable name to be kept for you son.

We make dua that Allah Ta’alah blesses your son with the reality of his name by making him pure, firm and resolute on his Imaan. Aameen.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
