Advice on certain books.

Question

As Salaamu Alaikum

1)There is a Kitaab called, humourous anecdotes from the lighter side of Islamic history. In there a few anecdotes apparently seem to be joking with Aayaat of Qur'aan. Are such types of jokes permitted?

Ref. Pg 107, 103

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Sister in Islam,

You address two queries:

  • Anecdotes which apparently seem to be joking with Aayaat of the Quran Shareef.
  • A good kitaab on the more detailed Masaa’il of Haidh to be taught to female students of Deen.

1.      There is a science called Balaghah which deals with the eloquence of the Arabic language and how to convey proper meanings according to the situation. Balaghah also deals with the meanings of words and how they take shape in their different situations. There is a concept called Iqtibaas in Balaghah which is a way of beautifying one’s speech by quoting a verse of the Quran without the intention of mentioning it to be part of the Quran. [1]

The incidents in humorous anecdotes should be understood in this context.

2.      Birgivi’s manual is a useful book which discusses the more detailed and intricate Masaa’il of Haidh. It should be studied under an experienced Aalim who is aware of these laws, as they cannot be understood easily. The Darul Iftaa is preparing a detailed book on the topic.

الاقتباس) خرج به اقتباس القرآن والحديث، وبقي عقدهما، وهو النظم مع تغيير كثيرا، ومع التنبيه على أنه من أحدهما، أما عقد القرآن فكقول الشاعر:
