Fatwa #4309611 June 2024United Kingdom

is it necessary for Udhiyyah sheep to have tails?

Question

I would like to know the mas'alah regarding whether it is necessary for Udhiyyah sheep to have tails.

Answer

The animal of Udhiyyah (Qurbani) must have at least two thirds of the tail for the sacrifice to be valid. If more than one third of the tail is cut, then the sacrifice is not valid.

In the past, animals with tails were not available in South Africa. Hence a Fatwa of concession to sacrifice animals without tails was issued. Alhamdulillah, currently animals with tails are easily available in South Africa.

Sacrificing an animal is a great act of worship. We should exercise precaution in fulfilling our obligations in Shariah.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best

Mufti Ebrahim Desai.
