I had a doubt that I broke my fast earlier - What do i do?

Question

I have question related to fasting. On one of the fasting days, I had a doubt that I broke my fast earlier. I also feel that I am suffering with OCD(obsessive. Compulsive disorder).  Although I make sure before breaking fast that time for iftar has come and I also normally wait for 2-3 minutes after iftar time to break fast. But on that I could not keep track of time and broke fast without watching the time . So I have a doubt that I broke fast earlier than maghrib (although not completely sure that I broke fast earlier or not). Do I have to make up the fast for which I have doubt (but not sure) that I broke the fast earlier 1-2 minutes? Kindly answer this question.

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh

We appreciate your sincerity in seeking clarity on the issue in the reference. We are sad to note of your OCD condition. May Allah grant you complete Shifā. Aameen.

You mention that you are in doubt that you broke your fast two-three minutes earlier before Maghrib on one occasion.

If a person breaks his fast thinking that the sun has set, then finds out that it had not set, he will have to make Qadha (make up) for that fast.[1]

You should apply your mind and try to ascertain when you broke your fast.

If your predominant thought is that you broke the fast before sunset, then you should repeat the fast. If your predominant thought is that you broke the fast after sunset, then your fast is still intact.[2]

After coming to a conclusion, ignore the whispers from Shaytaan. Shaytaan strives to busy the self with insignificant, unimportant and irrelevant matters thereby frustrating one.

Therefore, the simple remedy is to ignore such thoughts and engage yourself in the Zikr of Allah, and recite:

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Shaytaan.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best.
