What name should I keep for my daughter?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is important for Muslim parents to name their child after illustrious, pious luminaries of the past.

It is narrated in a hadith that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “On the Day of Judgement you will be called by your names and the names of your fathers, so give yourself good names”[Abu Dawud]^[1]

The names Khadeejah, Maryam and Asiya, are all suitable and commendable names for a daughter. You may name your daughter after anyone of them. There are numerous virtues mentioned regarding each one of them.

Hereunder are a few virtues mentioned by Nabi(Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) :

Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has said praising them: “The following women are sufficient (as examples) for you Maryum (Radhiyallahu Anha), the daughter of Imran, Khadeejah (Radhiyallahu Anha) the daughter of Khuwaylid, Fatimah (Radhiyallahu Anha)  the daughter of Muhammad and Asiyah (Radhiyallahu Anha), the wife of Pharaoh.”[Musnad Ahmad, Tirmidhi]^[2]

Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has stated regarding Maryam and Asiya( radhiyallahu anhuma) : “The superiority of Aisha (Radiallahu Anha) to other ladies is like the superiority of Tharid (i.e. meat and bread dish) to other meals. Many men reached the level of perfection, but no woman reached such a level except Maryum (Radiallahu Anha), the daughter of Imran and Asiyah (Radiallahu Anha), the wife of Pharaoh.” [Bukhari]^[3]

Regarding Khadeejah  and Maryam (Radiallahu Anha) , Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has stated : “The best woman of her era, was Maryam daughter of Imraan, and the best woman of this era is Khadeejah” ^[4] [Bukhari]

We advise you to choose whichever name you incline toward. There is no specific order of merit as all these names are excellent choices.

4948- حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَوْنٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا (ح) وحَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ، عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي زَكَرِيَّا، عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلى الله عَلَيهِ وَسَلمَ: إِنَّكُمْ تُدْعَوْنَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ بِأَسْمَائِكُمْ، وَأَسْمَاءِ آبَائِكُمْ، فَأَحْسِنُوا أَسْمَاءَكُمْ.

12391 - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «حَسْبُكَ مِنْ نِسَاءِ الْعَالَمِينَ مَرْيَمُ ابْنَةُ عِمْرَانَ، وَخَدِيجَةُ بِنْتُ خُوَيْلِدٍ، وَفَاطِمَةُ ابْنَةُ مُحَمَّدٍ، وَآسِيَةُ امْرَأَةُ فِرْعَوْنَ»

سنن الترمذي ت شاكر (5/ 703)

3878 - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ زَنْجُوَيْهِ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " حَسْبُكَ مِنْ نِسَاءِ العَالَمِينَ: مَرْيَمُ ابْنَةُ عِمْرَانَ، وَخَدِيجَةُ بِنْتُ خُوَيْلِدٍ، وَفَاطِمَةُ بِنْتُ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآسِيَةُ امْرَأَةُ فِرْعَوْنَ ": «هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحٌ»

 3250 - حدثنا آدم حدثنا شعبة عن عمرو بن مرة قال سمعت مرة الهمذاني يحدث عن أبي موسى الأشعري رضي الله عنه قال

 : قال النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم ( فضل عائشة على النساء كفضل الثريد على سائر الطعام كمل من الرجال كثير ولم يكمل من النساء إلا مريم ابنة عمران وآسية امرأة فرعون )

3249 - حدثني أحمد بن أبي رجاء حدثنا النضر عن هشام قال أخبرني أبي قال سمعت عبد الله بن جعفر قال سمعت عليا رضي الله عنه يقول

 : سمعت النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم يقول ( خير نسائها مريم ابنة عمران وخير نسائها خديجة )
