Reciting Quran whilst in mensuration.
Question
Assalamualaikum wa rahmathullahi wabarakaathuhu. ....my doubt is....is it possible to read or study quran during women's hayl time....is am a student who studied in thableeg banat at present I am in saudi arabia here most of the salafs are teaching quran during hayl .... they are telling there is no hadees that ladies should not recite during mensuration time.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
According to majority of scholars (mujtahideen) a woman in haidh (menstruation) is not permitted to recite the Qur’ān whether from memory, using a copy of the Qur’ān.1
Consider the following Hadith,
عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: لاَ تَقْرَأِ الحَائِضُ، وَلاَ الجُنُبُ شَيْئًا مِنَ القُرْآنِ.
Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Umar says that Rasullullah صلي الله عليه وسلم said, a woman who is in her haidh (menstruation) and a person who is in the state of janābat (major impurity) should not recite anything from Qur’ān. سنن الترمذي ت بشار (1/ 194)
Imam Tirmidhi رحمه الله states under this hadith,
وَهُوَ قَوْلُ أَكْثَرِ أَهْلِ العِلْمِ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَالتَّابِعِينَ، وَمَنْ بَعْدَهُمْ مِثْلِ: سُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيِّ، وَابْنِ المُبَارَكِ، وَالشَّافِعِيِّ، وَأَحْمَدَ وَإِسْحَاقَ،
This the view of majority of the companions of Rasulullah صلي الله عليه وسلم and the successors to the Sahabah and their heirs. Such as Hazrat Sufyan Thauri, Hazrat Abdullah ibn Mubarak, Imaam Shafi, Imaam Ahmad and Imaam Ishaq.
The hadith in reference is narrated through many chains of narrators and is considered authentic as also understood from the references in the footnotes.2
