Fatwa #393215 October 2001Canada

As-Salaam-U-Alakum I was wondering if it is permissible for a man to braid his hair?

Answer

Hadhrat Umme Haani (Radhiallaahu Ánha) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu
Álayhi Wasallam) entered Makkah during the conquest of Makkah with four
plaits. In another narration, she says, 'I saw Rasulullah (Sallallaahu
Álayhi Wasallam) with four plaits.' (Shamaail Tirmidhi p. 3 Pakistani print)

In the light of these Ahaadith, Muhadditheen explain that these plaits were
neither resembled that of women nor of the Kuffaar, hence, the plaiting the
hair is permissible if it does not resemble the plaits of women and of
non-Muslims.
