Diluted Zam Zam

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is permissible to dilute zam zam water with normal water. The blessings of zam zam water will still be achieved. One may offer diluted zam zam as a gift without disclosing that it is diluted.

بدائع الصنائع في ترتيب الشرائع (3/ 63)

ولو حلف على ماء من ماء زمزم لا يشرب منه شيئا فصب عليه ماء من غيره كثيرا حتى صار مغلوبا فشربه يحنث لما ذكرنا من أصله أن الشيء لا يصير مستهلكا بجنسه.

Zam-Zam has countless virtues and it is  water from Jannah. It is the most blessed and purest of all waters on the surface of the earth and cure for every sickness. Consider the following Hadith;

عن ابن عباس رضي الله عنهما قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم خير ماء على وجه الأرض ماء زمزم فيه طعام الطعم وشفاء السقم

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbās RA reports that Nabi صلى الله عليه وسلمmentioned:

“The best water on the surface of this world is zam-zam. In it is food for the hungry and cure for the sick.” (Tabarāni)[Fathul-Qadeer:Kitaab-Ul-Haj] 

Muslims consider the water of Zam-Zam as revered and unique, and they return home carrying it for thousands of miles as a prized possession and a gift to their friends and families. But by law, a person is only allowed to carry a limited amount of Zam-Zam with him. This lands him in a situation where he is left with a limited amount of Zam-Zam which is not enough to gift his family and friends. The only option is to add other water to Zam-Zam which is permissible.

By adding other water to Zam-zam the blessings of Zam-zam will remain and not decrease. You can simply gift it without revealing it being pure or diluted.
