Is it permissible to give a Ring as gift?

Question

AsalaamuAlaykum, thank you for this service. I have a question about wedding rings.

If a couple plan to marry according to Shariah & Sunnah, would it be permissable to give the bride a ring on the Nikkah? Not because they are trying to copy Kuffars but because the bride likes a diamond ring and that is what she is gifted with.

Also, as the bride wears a hijab, she only really likes to wear rings or bangles. Therefore is it permissable to give her a diamond wedding ring as a gift?

Also I read that it is good for the groom to give his bride a gift so could be give her the ring then? The ring would most probably have a centre diamond and maybe side stones on the gold or silver metal. so if the bride picks out this ring is it ok as a wedding gift? Especially If the bride prefers rings to other kinds of jewellery?

Thank you.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Shariah permits us to express our happiness on happy occasions like nikah. One way of expressing happiness is offering gifts. It is even meritorious to offer a gift of one’s liking and choice like the description of the ring in the query.
