is it permissable to consume Asafoetida?
Question
is Asafoetida(hing) halal in islam?
Answer
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
Asafoetida is a latex gum from the celery and/or parsley family which is exuded from the rhizome root of several species of the perennial herb, Ferula[1]. This is usually referred to as hing in the subcontinent and is used as a medicine and as a condiment in food.
Accordingly, it will be permissible to use and consume asafoetida[2].

{وَإِذْ قُلْتُمْ يَامُوسَى لَنْ نَصْبِرَ عَلَى طَعَامٍ وَاحِدٍ فَادْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُخْرِجْ لَنَا مِمَّا تُنْبِتُ الْأَرْضُ مِنْ بَقْلِهَا وَقِثَّائِهَا وَفُومِهَا وَعَدَسِهَا وَبَصَلِهَا قَالَ أَتَسْتَبْدِلُونَ الَّذِي هُوَ أَدْنَى بِالَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ}
