Fatwa #30113 June 2001Pakistan

Is it permissible to use Zakaat money to pay people who work for an Islamic Boarding school e.g. the aalim?

Question

I am involved in running an Islamic boarding school for underpriveleged children. We collect money from the local muslim community in order to run the school. We collect Zakaat, Sadaqah and Lillah money.

Answer

Generally, the school and its administration is the Wakeel (representative)
of its poor and needy students with their consent (if the students are
adult) or their parents (if students are minor) to accept Zakaat monies on
their behalf and pay their fees to the school. The fees paid with Zakaat
will be Lillah and can be used by the school to fulfil its needs, for
example, salaries, etc.
