Fatwa #2757415 December 2013United Kingdom

Should I abort my baby if the pregnancy will risk my life?

Question

I wanted to know when a woman is in childbirth - if there are complications and both the mothers and the new unborn childs life are in danger and only one can be saved - according to shariah whose life is a priority? is it a priority to save the mother or the child?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

What is the complication and why both lives cannot be saved?

In principle, both lives are equally important and both lives should be saved.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
