Fatwa #2753329 November 2013United States of America

I have Schizophrenia symptom and I have bad thoughts saying that Allah hates me.

Question

I am a 20 year old Haifz e Quran. I am currently living in the United States. I think that i have Schizophrenia and i am visiting a therapist every week. I get alot of bad thoughts saying that i am doing something wrong, which will displease Allah SWT and cause me to to be amongst the ones who are away from Allah SWT.

Alhamdulillah i am doing my best to perform the five prayers. Is there any dua you can tell me which might help me in times of stress. And also any advice or any hadith regarding people who are struggling with mental illnesses such as Schizophrenia.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

You are visiting a therapist. We make Dua Allah grant you Shifaa. Ameen.

If you experience involuntary thoughts, you should not worry about such thoughts. Simply ignore them. Feeling bad about such thoughts is a sign of your Iman.

The following Dua is effective to overcome grief and anxiety.

«اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الهَمِّ وَالحَزَنِ، وَالعَجْزِ وَالكَسَلِ، وَالجُبْنِ وَالبُخْلِ، وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ، وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ (صحيح البخاري ج12 ص504 دار البشائر الإسلامية)

Transliteration: Allaahumma innee a‘oodhu bika minal hammi wal hazan wal ‘ajzi wal kasal wal jubn wal bukhl wa dala ‘id dayn wa ghalabatirrijaal

Translation: Oh Allah, I seek your protection from stress and depression and weakness and laziness and miserliness and cowardice and burden of debts and being overpowered by men.  [ Bukhari Vol.12 Pg.504 Dar-ul-Islamiyya]
