Fatwa #271177 October 2013United States of America

Does it constitute divorce if I said, “Not a problem, just think about and let me know” in response to the wife saying “give me Talaaq right now”?

Question

My wife and I had fight over a little issue. I said to her “I have a plan to “leave you” and in return she said then give me Talaaq right now and I said not a problem just think about it and let me know and I will do that right away (I did not repeat the name talaak). I also said to her, “since you said it, that means it happened once”. Does it constitute to One Talaak?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

What did you mean by, “Since you said it, that means it happened once”? What did you mean by “it” in both instances?
