Fatwa #2696017 September 2013Bermuda

Can I adopt views from other schools of thought in order to practice on the whole Sunnah?

Question

To complete sunnah

1-     Can we sometime hold hands in chest while qiyaam?

2-     Can we recite surah fatiha behind imam in silent prayers?

3-     Can we sometimes in takbeer raise our hands to shoulder also.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Brother in Islam,

If one is following the Madhhab of a particular Imam, for example, Imam Abu Hanifa Rahimahullah, he has to adhere to all the rulings of that Madhhab. One should not look at the practice of the other schools of thought, for example, the Shaf’i Madhhab, and entertain a doubt that as a Hanafi, he is not practising on those Sunnahs practiced by the Shaf’i. Every Imam has exerted himself in deducing the various rulings of Shariah from the Quran and Hadith. Whilst they differ in their conclusions, you should place your trust on the Imam you follow and adhere to his conclusions. In doing so, you can be rest assured that you are following the Sunnah.
