Fatwa #269118 April 2001South Africa

Exchange gifts on the 10th Muharram or days before the tenth.

Question

Must you forward gifts to your family members on the 10th Muharram or 2 to 3 days before will be fine. The reason for asking this question is it allows my family members to choose their gifts prior to the 10th.

Answer

Respected Brother-in-Islam

Assalaamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullaahi Wa Barakaatuhu

Nabi (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, 'He who spends abundantly on his
family on the day of Ashura, Allah will grant him Barkaat in his sustenance.
'

Spending abundantly does not necessitate the exchanging of gifts. However,
it will not be prohibited either.
