Fatwa #2617521 July 2013United States of America

Is it allowed to pay the interest with the benefits received from the government? is it permissible to get a mortgage and pay off the interest?

Question

1) the interest u pay to the bank for the mortgage they give you, are u allowed to pay the interest with the benefits u receive from the government eg disability living allowance, child benefit , etc. this is to bypass paying interest with the money you earn.

2) is it permissible to get a mortgage and pay off the interest quickly and then repent?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

1) It is impermissible to use the interest received from the Government to offset the interest owed to one's Bank as the government and the bank are separate entities.

2) Interest is categorically prohibited and Haram. It is not permissible to take out an interest bearing mortgage.

And Allah knows best
