Fatwa #257531 March 2001United Kingdom

If in the past I stole a book which at the time cost £10, do I need to pay back £10 or the equivalent price of the book now (eg £25)

Answer

In principle, the book should be returned.

If you do not have the book or wish to keep it, you should pay the present value £25 for it.
