Is it permissible for me to accept the endowment provided to me for my studies?

I am a graduate (PhD) student and I am being paid a salary by my prof and department. They also pay me a tuition fee separately which I have to pay back to the university.

I had applied for a government fellowship called OGS, which would reduce my profs contribution of fees for a year and also gives me some extra money at hand. I applied through my department but I eventually did not get this award. I think the department nominated me for a smaller award called the Graduate Student Endowment Fund (GSEF) on their own behalf (I didn't know about this), or I was separately nominated by the school of graduate studies based on previous academic performance, etc. They said this money would be directed towards the tuition fees payable to the university, so in a way, I'll get this money in hand since I wouldn't need to pay the university this portion of the tuition fees which the department already gave me before.

Since this is an Endowment fund, it seems it must be maintained through donations from rich people to UofT or through government or student contributions to a central fund. 

I was just concerned that maybe this money may have Interest in it, and if it is Halal for me to accept or not. If it was in return for work I do, I think that would make it Halal (I already get a salary for my research, so I am not sure if I fall in that category). Also, I am not sure if this is classified as a 'gift' and if that would be halal or not, or if I can consider me getting the award in return for my grades, academics as a form of 'work' to the university...

Also, not sure if this makes sense, but lets say I find out that x % of the amount is from a donor's principal and (1-x) % is interest money. Can we give away the (1-x) % to charity and keep the rest  or we should totally not accept the whole amount in the first place.

I would be grateful for any advise on the matter.
