Fatwa #22409 February 2001South Africa

Is it ok for me, an adult Muslim male, to communicate with my first cousin who is an adult Muslim female?

Question

By communicate I mean exchanging emails; and not for the sake of nikah or other purpose but for mentioning general goings on. Jazakallah.

Answer

It is not permissible for an adult female (Muslim) to communicate in any
way, be it telephonically, via snail mail or email with a non-Mahram (i.e.
an adult male who she can marry in some stage in her life), except through
necessity.
