My husband and I have been divorced in an English court. Are we also automatically divorced Islamically?

Question

My husband and I were divorced in an English Court. He and his family are adamannt that on receiving the decree absolute, we were also islamically divorced, although the word 'talaaq' has never been mentioned. Is the nikah stilly valid?
