Is it permissible to keep dreadlocks?

Question

Asalaamu alaikum. I would like to know are dreadlocks halal. If you don't know dreadlocks it is when your hair is like twisted but permenately. I don't believe it interferes with your wudu as long as you take care of it. Thank you. Please support answer with Qur'an & or Sunnah.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Dreadlocks are permitted as long as this hairstyle is not an imitation of the disbelievers.

However, this hairstyle can cause separate issues for women and men since it is more of a permanent hairstyle that often cannot be undone. To open the dreads, the hair is usually cut short, or from near the roots.

Ruling for Women:

A woman who wants to keep dreadlocks will need to keep it permanently because if she wants to change her hairstyle she will need to cut her hair. Since it is not permissible for a woman to cut her hair in this way, once she decides to keep dreadlocks, it will be   permanent.

As with braided/plaited hair, when taking ghusl, a woman with dreadlocks does not have to wash all her hair. However, she does have to ensure that water reaches the roots of all her hair.

For further details please refer to Ask Imam #19558

Ruling for Men:

While men can cut their hair, they do not have the same dispensation as women with braided/plaited hair do for ghusl. Men have to undo their braided hair to make sure that water reaches every single hair.

As stated earlier, since dreadlocks cannot generally be undone, it is not practical for men to keep this hairstyle because they will not be able to undo the dreads for ghusl. [i][ii][iii]
