Kaffaarah for returning embezzled money
Question
Category: Fiqh Question: During my University times, I used to arrange Events for Academic and Engineering Purposes annually. In this regard, we took handsome money from university to arrange it. But i am embrassed to say, I spent some of the money for personal use. As per my calculation, its around 20,000 rupees. Please advise me how would i give KUFARA for it. Either by giving back money to university or Should i give money to Masjid Construction being built in remote areas or any other charity work? I personally feel to give money to masjid. PLEASE ADVISE.

As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
Brother in Islaam,
Your remorse over misusing a trusted fund is a sign of your Imaani conscience.
You state that you used a trusted fund for personal use. Accordingly, you should return the amount in reference to either the event coordinator or the university itself[1]. You should also make tawbah and istighfaar.
