Is regular singing and listening music forbidden in Islam?

Music is expressly prohibited in many ahādith.

For example, Imam Bukhārī narrates in his Sahīh that Rasūlullāh (sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam) said:

“There will certainly be from my ummah, groups [of people] who will regard illicit sexual intercourse, silk, wine and musical instruments [ma‘āzif] as halāl....” [i]

ليكونَنَّ من أمَّتي أقوامٌ ، يستحلُّونَ الحِرَ والحريرَ ، والخمرَ والمعازِفَ ، ولينزلَنَّ أقوامٌ إلى جنبِ عَلَمٍ [i]

 يروحُ عليهم بسارحةٍ لهم ، يأتيهِم - يعني الفقيرَ- لِحاجةٍ فيقولوا : ارجِع إلينا غدًا ، فيبيِّتُهمُ اللَّهُ ، ويضَعُ العَلَمَ   ويمسخُ آخرينَ قِرَدةً وخنازيرَ إلى يومِ القيامَةِ
