Can I sell a gift?

Question

I would like to know if it is permissible according to the Quran and Sunnah to sell a gift. Gifts or complimentary items such as small durables and tickets as you know are received free, therefore will it be permissible for one to sell them?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is permissible to sell something that has been given to someone as a gift because when a person is given a gift, he becomes the owner of that item[1] and when a person owns something, he can do what he wishes with it[2].

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
