Should we only do Istikhara for marriage?
Question
Assalam u alykum. I just wanted to know whether the istigaara nafil should be prayed only while seeking Allah's help when decideing the life partner or can it be prayed to seek Allah's help to decide other dilemmatic situations in life, for example choosing one's career
Answer
In the name of Allāh, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Assalāmu ῾alaykum wa Rahmatullāhi Wabarakātuh
It is permissible and in fact encouraged to make Istikhaara for whatever matter of importance we are faced with. The permissibility of this is clear from the words of the Dua
اللهماني.........اللهمانكنتتعلمانهذاالامر.......
Oh Allah if you know that in this matter is good for me.
The word امر translated as matter/affair comes in the meaning of generality indicating to the fact that it encompasses every matter.
Mulla Ali Qaari رحمهالله mentions that Istikhaara could be done for any matter whether it is Nikaah, travel ,etc.
