Is it compulsory to follow any one imam of four imams?

Question

My question is that is it compulsory to follow any one imam of four imams? without following them if we only follow the quran and hadith is it right ?if not right then why so and which imam to follow because all four imams did great work for islam they are all respectable .we have to follow wholly one imam ?cant we follow more than one imam at a time?
