Does Vinegar contain Alcohol?

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

Vinegar originates from wine. It goes through a chemical process whereby it transforms into vinegar. At times wine naturally transforms into vinegar. The result of the process is that the elements which render alcohol Haram are removed. Thus, all vinegars are Halaal and are proper for consumption including those that contain 0.1% alcohol.

The Hadith encourages us to have vinegar. Rasulullah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) has mentioned:    

نعم الأدم - أو الإدام - الخل

“What a nice curry is vinegar” (Sahih Al-Muslim #5471)

However, it is encouraged to consume those vinegars that do not contain any percentage of alcohol in them.

والخمر إذا صارت خلا ودخل فيها بعض الحموضة ولكن فيها بعض المرارة لا تكون خلا عند أبي حنيفة رحمه الله تعالى حتى تذهب المرارة وعندهما بقليل الحموضة يحل هذا إذا تخلل بنفسه أما إذا خلله بعلاج بالملح أو بغيره يحل عندنا الكل في شرح الطحاوي وفي شرح الشافي لو صب الخل في الخمر يؤكل سواء كانت الغلبة للخمر أو للخل بعد ما صار حامضا وعلى قياس قول أبي يوسف رحمه الله تعالى إن كانت الخمر هي الغالب فكذلك أما إذا كانت الغلبة للخل ذكر في مجموع النوازل لا يحل من ساعته ما لم يمض زمان علم أنه صار خلا كذا في الخلاصة   (الفتاوى الهندية,مكتبة الرشيدية,5/410) 

ولو خلط الخل بالخمر وصار حامضا يحل وإن غلب الخمر وإذا دخل فيه بعض الحموضة لا يصير خلا عنده حتى يذهب تمام المرارة وعندهما يصير خلا كما في المضمرات(حاشية ابن عابدين,سعيد,6/451)
