I am told that since I am unmarried I must call those who are younger than me and unmarried as Appa or Baji? Eventhough they are 1-5 years younger than me.

Question

I am told that since I am unmarried I must call those who are younger than me and married as Appa or Baji? Sometimes the couple are both younger than me (1-5 years younger) and I have to call them Appa or Baji? Is this Islamic or cultural? Do I have to call my elders as Baji and Apa? I would like to know if this is islamic or cultural?

Answer

To respect elders and show love to the young is an act of great virtue and
merit.
The cultural practice enquired by you is not unIslamic either.
