Fatwa #125871 September 2004Malaysia

1)What does the name "Ashikeen" means? 2)If I combine "Nadia" and "Ashikeen" together, what would it mean? 3)Is it okay to name a Muslim child with a non-Muslim name that has good meaning?

Answer

1. Aashikeen ? lovers

2. Nadia is derived from the Arabic root word ?Nida? which means to call. It is an appropriate and suitable Muslim name which would imply calling to Allah and the truth.

3. A Muslim child should not be named with a non-Muslim name, even if it has a good meaning. (Shaami vol.6 pg.417; HM Saeed)
